Tuli

Textile objects supporting the therapy
of people in advanced dementia
iF Design Talent Award 2022
Textile objects with hands

In 2015, about 50 million people in the world suffered from dementia. According to the forecast, this number will have been increased three times by 2050. One of the most problematic aspects of dementia for the patients and caretakers is the behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD). At least one of the symptoms occurs in 97% of patients, and the symptoms often co-exist, which contributes to the power of their impact. The aim of the project is to alleviate BPSD symptoms in people with dementia, such as anxiety and agitation, and accordingly improve the quality of life of both patients and people in their environment.

Tuli is a set of soft, textile objects that ease anxiety and agitation in people with advanced dementia. It stimulates the senses and engages in simple activities. The objects contain an insert filled with a buckwheat husk, which gives them a "pleasant" weight and can be heated to strengthen the feeling of warmth. Two forms complement each other; one gives a feeling of being wrapped and stable, and the other encourages active hugging and stroking. It makes it easier to get in touch "here and now" with people with advanced dementia. The solution is safe and easy to produce. It has a positive impact on the quality of life of patients and people in their environment.
Since Tuli is designed for people with advanced dementia, it can calm down and relieve negative emotions also for others due to the fact that it refers to universal ways of bringing calmness and a feeling of comfort.
